[Restoration]

Since buying the 1st year Mako Shark in January 1969, I have had countless memorable experiences with it. But I’ve also neglected it and failed to give her the TLC that a classic like this one deserves. Therefore the time came in 1989 to give her a total new lease on life. Fully occupied with career, I planned to start the rebuild upon retirement in 1999. Not wanting to neglect the drive train, however, I totally restored engine, tranny and differential so that they would remain healthy. All reassembly was done using STP lubricant so that no seals would dry out or any surfaces corrode.

Having all the original components we performed an authentic “body-off” restoration from the ground up. You can see the authentication of this vehicle by moving on to this descriptive page, which tabulates the original part number and specification of each component. Each and every one of these original parts was retained and all Numbers fully match the Original Shop Work Order from St Louis on December 20, 1967! :

You’ll see photos on these pages of putting the vehicle back to prime condition and the laborious but rewarding work of restoring her.

    That Was Then:

    [’78 Restoration1] [’78 Restoration2]

Vette after earlier 1978 Restoration. After a Fender-Bender, and needing Flared Wheel Wells (to avoid severe body chipping from sand and gravel off of the tires) I performed minor body work and repainted the vehicle. I chose Black to be sexier at the time, but later realized that I needed to eventually return to the factory specified British Racing Green.

    Certification Documents:

    [Tank Sticker] [Window Sticker] [Inspection]

Here is a recreation of the original Gas Tank Sticker(Shop Work Order),Window Sticker and Dealer Inspection Document, representing the car as built in St Louis on December 20, 1967 and shipped to Lake City, IA on January, 1968.

Engine & Drive Train Were Rebuilt First:

[Rebuild Engine] [Restored Engine 1] [Restored Engine 2]

Complete Rebuilding of the 427 Big Block. We did it in our garage in 1989 in order to store it in perfect condition for the body-off restoration that will follow in 10 years. Engine was reassembled with STP lubricant to ensure no dried seals or corrosion. When the drive train was installed into the refurbished vehicle, we took it to Jake’s Quality Auto in White Bear, MN for a full optimization.

    Separate Body from Chassis:

    [Body On Trailer] [Lift Body]

Jeff & I separated the body from the frame, hung the body from the reinforced garage ceiling, removed the frame and lowered the body onto our trailer. Each would be repaired separately and then rejoined for the final restoration.

    Recondition Chassis:

    [’03 Restoration1] [’03 Restoration2] [’03 Restoration3]

After disassembly, the frame and each chassis part was media blasted and de-rusted via alkaline electrolysis immersion (Restoration Expertise by Kirby McLaughlin). After metal restoration, all items were then powder coated (Coating Expertise by Powder Coating Tech). The Drive Train components were re-conditioned and re-installed. All Stencil and Greasepaint markings were reapplied and used to dictate the reassembly shimming.

Install Engine, Restore Underbody & Drop Onto Chassis:

[Drive Train] [Refurbish Underbody] [Engine In Chassis]

The rebuilt Engine and Drive Train were then installed onto the rebuilt chassis. Brakes and Steering components were installed. The Underbody was fully restored and the Mating of the body with its rebuilt chassis was accomplished at this “Milestone”.

    Restore & Paint Body:

    [doortag] [underbody] [flares]
    [primer] [rub primer] [booth]
    [after paint] [firewall] [finish car]

A meticulous regeneration of the body and removable hardtop was done over a 6-month Sabbatical at Century Avenue Collision, after which they painted a number of paint coats of Gelcoat, wet-sanded Primer, 4 coats of primary color in Acrylic Polyurethane Enamel and a buffed-out Clear Coat. We then installed a new Convertible Top to put the vehicle in tip-top condition, better than new!

    This Is Now:

The last stop on a full body restoration. Chevrolet and Duntov to the ultimate! They would have been impressed with our Craftmanship and modern Process Technology.
