A super-compatible gang of Master Anglers have fished a remote lake in Northwestern Ontario for the past decade with astounding success. We’d tell you where the lake was, but then the Ontario DNR would require that we shoot you. Suffice it to say that the only way in to this secret lake is to fly-in by float plane, with a pilot who is sworn to secrecy at the risk of his first-born.
They catch and release 2 dozen walleyes per angler per day and only keep enough in a slot range of 17.9-18 inches to enjoy a shore lunch each evening.
The quality of the fishing experience is exceeded only by the tranquility of the scenery, the closeness of the animal life, the tastiness of the cuisine and the spontaneity of the campfire humor. Because of their notorious evening ceremony of Liver and Onions on the bunkhouse evening before the fly-in, they’re known in Ontario as the “L & O” Gang.
Here’s a couple of photos of that group of Merry Men at their fishing shack.
Ontario DNR Master Angler Awards have been bestowed as follows: 2001 Bob Grzywinski, Barry Witt; 2002 Dave Hagen; 2003 Dave Hagen, Don Dau, Dave Johnson; 2004 Matt Kalis, Jim Witt; 2005 Bob Grzywinski, Dave Johnson; 2006 Dave Hagen; 2007 Dave Johnson, Barry Witt; 2008 Dave Hagen, John Gunther, Don Dau, Matt Kalis; 2009 Bob Grzywinski; 2010 Jim Witt, John Gunther, Don Dau; 2013 Don Dau, Bob Grzywinski, Barry Witt, Jim Witt; 2014 Don Dau, John Gunther; 2016 Don Dau, John Gunther; 2017 John Gunther, Jim Witt; 2018 Dave Johnson.
