The first car that I ever owned was a Model A Ford. In 1958, as a high school junior, I ‘acquired’ a 1929 Station Wagon from our neighbor, a retired mail carrier. I would like to dream that it was a ‘Woodie’, but it was something as cool but not as eye-catching. Delivering mail in harsh winters, he converted a Fodor into a station wagon and put skiis on the front and dual tracks in the rear. Quite a practical machine for the conditions.
I say ‘acquired’ because I took over ownership, but with an IOU of $25. As a kid without cash, I had to hope I could earn something in the next 2 years to pay it off. As it turned out, I graduated penniless so I had to sell the car for $25 in order to pay my debt before I left town for good.
Fast forward 45 years, and I have finally finished the restoration of the Corvette, and was looking for another classic car to tinker with. I went on a quest for an old Model A Ford to revitalize my relationship with Henry’s baby after all this time.
Turning to the shopping vehicle of the day, I went to EBay with my quest. Of course, I found TWO that I liked, and hoping to get one for sure, I played in the bidding of both. You know the punch line here: I got both of them.
Patty and I went down to Oklahoma to pick up the ‘black’ one. Knowing that the ‘white’ one was in Wisconsin, not far from our cabin, I decided to work on that one. Therefore, I called my brother Jon and informed him that we were bringing him a ‘retirement project’. You can see on a nearby web-page at this site how well he did with the ‘black’ one, winning a number of rewards over the business until we sold the car in 2017.
